Investigation of environmental embrittlement of Fe3Al using micro-fracture testing

Fe3Al based alloys have attractive properties, which are excellent corrosion resistance, relative low material costs and relatively low density. But, they suffer from limited ductility. In this work, we studied the moisture-produced hydrogen embrittlement of single crystalline Fe3Al using a novel in-situ microcantilever bending approach integrating a nanoindentation device and environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM). The cantilever with notch is prepared by focused ion beam (FIB). During testing, the mechanical properties and the propagation of the crack are recorded. The results show that the mechanical response depends on crystal orientation and environmental condition. The fracture surfaces are observed by SEM. Furthermore, the test results are discussed in relation to environmental embrittlement.
