The reversible dehydration and re-hydration of salts is considered as a promising thermochemical process for the storage of heat. Many criteria are crucial for the selection of a suitable salt system. Besides the energy density, the thermodynamic properties determine the maximum possible temperature and the climatic conditions under which the heat can be released by hydration. In addition the kinetics and mechanism of the hydration reaction further restrict the range of the climatic conditions under which the hydration takes place. Therefore, extensive investigations of the mechanism and the kinetics of hydration reactions are highly desirable to define the suitability of a salt as heat storage material as well as the appropriate climatic conditions to release the heat for the respective salt—water system. The climatic conditions under which strontium chloride can be used as thermochemical heat storage material will be shown in this contribution.
