Effect of chemo-mechanical coupling on phase transformations in steel

Many solid-solid phase transformations are accompanied by significant lattice distortions due to the difference in lattice parameters of phases. This results in significant stresses which do not only change the driving force for the phase transformation but can also significantly influence the diffusion processes. In order to illustrate the effect of chemo-mechanical coupling we present an investigation of phase transformations in steel using the CALPHAD type thermodynamics coupled to elasticity. The effect of composition dependence of elastic properties will be discussed and illustrated by the phase-field simulation examples.
