A numerical modelling approach to investigate the mechanical response of nanoporous gold using beam element

The current work is aiming to present a numerical modelling approach for investigating the mechanical response of nanoporous gold materials. The approach starts with a simple 'single-ligament' analyse with respect to fundamental deformation modes, and this forms a solid basis for the understanding level required by the next step, that is, the development of the representative volume element (RVE). Several modelling concepts are developed along the modelling approach, which are inspired and guided by experimental observation and statistical results. Finally, a so called 'RandomSection' modelling concept is considered to be superior under the considerations of its capability of mimicking several significant characteristics of the nanonporous materials.
