Characteristic misorientation at grain, phase and twin boundaries: reveal¬ing the character of the deformation mechanism in high-alloy TRIP/TWIP steels

High alloy austenitic steels undergo different deformation mechanism depending on the actual chemical composition and the mode of deformation in terms of strain rate, stress state and temperature, for example. Due to the low stacking fault energy, deformation twinning and martensitic transformations (ε and α’) generate new boundaries in the austenite during plastic deformation. Depending on the nature of the boundary, defined orientation relationships are observed and characteristic orientation deviations from these relationships evolve during plastic deformation. Their analysis offers insights into the active deformation mechanisms and the interplay with conventional dislocation slip in the individual phases, the nature of the phase transformation and the relationship between twinning and ε-martensite formation in the austenite.
