Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation treatment of magnesium surfaces: a study in biocompatibility.

As the research on magnesium materials progresses, its acceptance as an ideal candidate for the third generation of implantable biomaterials is gaining wide consensus among the scientific community. Although issues with the material are present, many steps forward have been done in the last 10 years to improve on all the desired material´s characteristics.

Among the most notable issue with the implantation of magnesium as an orthopedic-suitable material, the quick degradation in biological environment is probably the most important to solve. On purpouse, several different kinds of surface modifications have been developed during the years, ranging from Hydroxyapatite coating, to electroless coatings, to Meotec´s top competence: Plasma Electolytic Oxidation (PEO) ceramic surface transformation.

Although the prevention of corrosion is of upmost importance, the biological compatibility of the implant in all its useful life is, obviously, another prime aspect to consider in order to guarantee the patient´s health and a successful recovery of the traumatized regions.

The current work focuses on investigating the biocompatibility properties of PEO treated magnesium surfaces, through both direct and indirect cell viability tests. Whenever possible, the results are correlated with the corrosion behaviour of the samples.
